Ronan was impressed with the Ikarrian guild. He and the mercenaries had spent the following three days tracking the creatures. The mortals’ prints were hardly visible, but the Horizons were able to read the land well enough to see that the possessed mortals were heading to the East.

On the third night, under a starry sky, Eshe began recounting a story of her travels with the vampire nomads—the fact that she had been of them was unsurprising to Ronan. The hooped jewelry that pierced the archer’s ears held markings of the dune people. Not to mention the amulet—a single coin of copper tied to a string—that hung around Axar’s neck. It was enough to tell him that the objects both originated from or held some connection to the East.

“The desert wraiths are pricks,” Eshe said, flicking a speck of lint from her cloak. “Sometimes they would block our clan’s path and the only way to pass them was to solve their riddles. Other times they served as a distraction so certain groups of the Kairos people could ambush you. The latter was the most popular option. And that one was a pup at the time, completely useless,” she jabbed a finger to where Axar lay beside Zara. “But he would find ways to follow me and other fighting partners and cause chaos as we eradicated our attackers.”

The shifter tsked. “I was only trying to help.” His smile turned bright. “Though, you did have to save me a few times while fending off those bastards.”

The buttons of his fighting leathers were unhooked and peeled back to reveal a sliver of his tattooed chest. He rested on his back with his arms crossed behind his head. There were times throughout the evening when he would glance up at the unsuspecting Zara Santos and whack her arm. She would hiss and thump him on the chest with a fist. Axar’s teasing brought a light to her face, a shine that Ronan hadn’t seen before.

“Careful,” Hakim warned. He had been sitting on a stump, eyeing the two mercenaries with amusement.

Eshe merely shook her head, her lips on the verge of a smile.

Sibling behavior, Ronan realized. Seeing it made his heart deflate, as he mourned a fading memory. Suns Above, he was almost starting to forget how his younger brother looked.

Hael had been fourteen at the time of his death. Didn’t he have gray eyes like him—like their father? No, he’d had darker eyes, almost black, the same as their mother’s. But he had the same midnight hair as him, with deep blue wings . . .

Ronan held onto the weak image as tightly as he could.

The campfire flickered, sending sprays of embers toward the sky. The sight of the flames unnerved him. Had since he had started on this journey with the guild. But he held back the urge to cower at the sight of the fire. He wouldn’t give into that deeply embedded pain. Not in front of the Horizons.

Zara suddenly stood up from her side.
